Why Vaccinations are Important

Pet vaccinations are one of the most responsible and caring actions you can take as a pet owner. Vaccinations not only protect your pet from severe illnesses but also contribute to the overall well-being of the pet community. By vaccinating your furry companions, you help create a safer environment for all animals, promoting a healthier and happier community of pets.

  1. Protection from dangerous diseases: Vaccinations protect your pet from dangerous diseases such as canine distemper, parvovirus, canine hepatitis, Feline Enteritis, Cat Flu and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). These diseases can cause severe illness and even death. Vaccinations stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies that can fight off these diseases and keep your pet healthy.

  2. Prevention of zoonotic diseases: Some animal diseases such as rabies can be transmitted to humans. Vaccinating your pet against diseases like rabies and leptospirosis can prevent the spread of these diseases to humans.

  3. Cost-effective: Vaccinations are a cost-effective way to keep your pet healthy. The cost of vaccinating your pet is significantly less than the cost of treating a serious illness. By vaccinating your pet, you can save money in the long run by preventing expensive medical bills.

  4. Peace of mind: Vaccinating your pet can give you peace of mind knowing that your pet is protected from deadly diseases. You can rest easy knowing that you are doing everything you can to keep your pet healthy.

  5. Improved quality of life: Vaccinations can improve your pet's quality of life by preventing serious illnesses that can cause pain, discomfort, and even disability. By keeping your pet healthy, you can help ensure a happy and active life.

Puppy and Kitten Vaccinations

Puppy Vaccinations

Puppy vaccinations are a crucial part of responsible pet ownership. Puppies are born with some immunity passed on from their mothers, but this protection diminishes over time. Vaccinations for puppies typically begin at around 6 to 8 weeks of age. The initial series of vaccinations helps boost their immune system and safeguard them against diseases like Distemper, Parvovirus, and Canine Hepatitis. Regular booster shots are then given to maintain their immunity throughout their young lives.

Kitten Vaccinations

Kittens are delicate little beings, and early vaccinations are vital in giving them a healthy start in life. The initial kitten vaccinations are typically administered around 8 to 9 weeks of age. These vaccinations protect them from diseases like Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. Regular booster shots are given to maintain their immunity and keep them healthy throughout their adult lives.

Dog Vaccinations

Just like humans, dogs can be susceptible to various infectious diseases. Regular vaccinations for dogs are essential to ensure they are shielded against diseases like Rabies, Leptospirosis, and Kennel Cough. Our caring team at Evervet will assess your dog's lifestyle, age, and health status to develop a personalised vaccination plan to keep them safe and protected.

Cat Vaccinations

Cats need protection too! Vaccinations for cats are essential to safeguard them from diseases like Rabies and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Regular vaccinations can help prevent the spread of these contagious diseases and ensure that your feline friends can lead long and comfortable lives.

Rabbit Vaccinations

At Evervet, we also offer vaccinations for rabbits. Common vaccines for rabbits include protection against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) and Myxomatosis. These vaccinations are essential to ensure the health and safety of your beloved bunnies.

What Diseases Are Dogs Vaccinated Against?

DOG DISEASES

Distemper

Distemper causes severe fever, respiratory symptoms (coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, pneumonia), eye discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, listlessness and dehydration. Nervous signs such as muscle tremors, convulsions, loss of balance and progressive paralysis can occur later in the course of the disease. The recovery rate is low.

Hepatitis

Infection with this virus can result in sudden death. Other patients suffer high fever, loss of appetite, pain, blue eye (cloudiness of the cornea) and jaundice.

Parvovirus

Parvovirus causes severe diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite, and extreme depression. It is often accompanied by rapid dehydration, bleeding from the bowel and collapse.

Canine (Kennel) Cough

This disease is characterised by a harsh, nonproductive cough that may persist for up to three weeks. In young, elderly or immunocompromised dogs it can predispose to a potentially fatal secondary pneumonia. Severe forms of canine cough are either caused by a virus (Parainfluenza) or less commonly a bacteria (Bordetella).

What Diseases Are Cats Vaccinated Against?

CAT DISEASES

Feline Enteritis

This disease causes severe fever, depression, loss of appetite, rapid weight loss, dehydration, vomiting or diarrhoea. It is usually fatal.

Cat Flu

Cat flu is a highly infectious disease in kittens that is very debilitating. We recommend vaccination against two cat flu viruses - Feline Herpes and Calicivirus. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers and fever. Cases vary in severity. Some cats will show only mild signs and seem otherwise normal. However, some cats are more severely affected and are lethargic, lose their appetite and become dehydrated. Kittens infected with Feline Herpesvirus become lifelong carriers of the virus and may develop symptoms and be contagious on and off throughout their lives. Humans (and other species like dogs) are not affected by this virus.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

FIV belongs to a group of viruses that include Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although HIV and FIV belong to the same family of viruses, it is not possible for FIV to be transmitted from an infected cat to humans. FIV is transmitted through fighting and bite wounds and, after an initial short illness, cats may remain healthy for several years. Ultimately the virus damages the immune system and infections or cancers may develop in FIV-positive patients. FIV vaccination is not 100% protective. The best protection is to make sure your cat leads a lifestyle that avoids contact with unknown or stray cats, in practical terms, this means living indoors. Accepting that this is not always possible, we recommend FIV vaccination for any cat that is allowed outside.

Protecting Your Pet’s Health

Safety First

Pet vaccinations are generally safe, and they play a crucial role in safeguarding your pet's health. Most pets experience only mild, temporary side effects, such as soreness or lethargy, which typically resolve within a day or two. Severe reactions are rare but possible. Be assured that our experienced veterinarians are trained to recognise and manage any adverse reactions should they occur.

Benefits vs. Risks

The benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. By keeping your pet up-to-date on their vaccinations, you're helping to protect them from a range of preventable diseases, ultimately ensuring a long and healthy life.

Alternatives for Special Cases

We understand that some pets have unique health concerns or other factors that may make traditional vaccinations unsuitable. In such cases, alternative vaccination options can be considered. These alternatives may include:

  • Non-Adjuvanted Vaccine: Non-adjuvanted vaccines are designed to minimize potential side effects. They are an excellent choice for pets with sensitivities or previous adverse reactions to vaccines.

  • Titers Testing: Titers testing measures the level of antibodies in your pet's blood to determine if they are already protected against specific diseases. This can help avoid unnecessary vaccinations for pets with sufficient immunity.

Personalised Care

At Evervet, we treat your pets as if they were our own, providing them with the best care and attention they deserve. Vaccinations are a vital part of our commitment to their well-being, and we are here to support them in every step of their health journey. Health considerations

Diease Prevention

Vaccinations are essential for preventing a range of infectious diseases. By bolstering our pets’ immune systems, vaccinations protect them from serious and often life-threatening illnesses, improving their quality of life and ensuring safer communities for both animals and humans.

Public Health

Vaccinating pets helps prevent the spread of contagious diseases to other animals and humans, promoting community health and safety.

Kittens

Vaccinating kittens is crucial for their health and well-being. Vaccines protect them from serious diseases such as panleukopaenia, ensuring a healthier start to life.

Puppies

Vaccinations for puppies are vital for preventing life-threatening diseases that can be challenging to treat. Diseases like parvovirus and distemper can have devastating consequences, but vaccines offer puppies crucial protection, ensuring they can grow up healthy and happy.

Rabbit & Ferrets

Just like with cats and dogs, vaccinations for rabbits and ferrets are an essential part of responsible pet ownership, ensuring their well-being and longevity. These small pets can be susceptible to diseases like rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease (calicivirus) and distemper in ferrets.

Peace of Mind

Knowing that your pet is vaccinated provides peace of mind for owners. It eliminates the worry and stress associated with the possibility of their pet contracting a preventable disease.
